All Kinds Of Flanges And What They Do

Flanges are generally defined as "lips" or "extensions" of a component that assist in securing the part to another component. There are many different kinds of flanges and different parts of flanges. For example, you probably did not know that the plastic extensions on the heels and toes of ski boots that help you buckle and strap into skis are actually flanges! The following flanges are more of the industrial kind, and here is what they are used for and what they do.

Stainless Steel Flanges

These flanges are usually used in connecting massive industrial pipes in factories. They are disk-shaped, heavy-duty, thick enough to withstand the force of liquids or gases passing through them, and have several holes around the lips of the flanges so that two flanges connecting two sections of pipe can be bolted securely together. They are made of stainless steel because stainless steel does not rust and is extremely strong under pressure. Similar flanges are used on locomotives to keep the wheels of the train in place and to help stop the trains when the brakes are applied.

Smaller Pipe Flanges

Smaller pipe flanges are often made of copper or brass. They are used for the smaller pipes throughout the factories and in general plumbing. Any pipes that are smaller than a couple of inches in diameter tend to make use of these flanges.

Vacuum Pipe Flanges

These flanges are specialty flanges that not only form a tight seal but also create a vacuum in the line. The vacuum is important to the flow of gas or liquid in the line. Without the vacuum, it would be nearly impossible to get the gas or liquid to flow properly throughout the plant. Vacuum flanges are frequently used when gas and liquid lines do not rely on pump systems or the gas or liquid has to travel long distances through a plant.

Compact Watertight Stainless Flange Squares

Not all flanges are circular! Some are actually square. Like a lot of other flanges made, these flanges are made to be watertight. The square shape can help create a more flush connection between a flat surface and a machinery pipe. The stainless steel performs as expected as well. If you would prefer a square to circular flange, talk to a flange manufacturer representative to see what is available for your needs.

About Me

Manufactured Home Production: An Inside Look

I grew up in an area that is known for manufactured home production. I was fascinated by the whole process, of how all of those materials came together to produce homes for people. It led me to learn everything I could about industrial manufactured home production. The more I learned, the more respect I developed for these structures and those who build them. I created this site to show others how structurally sound these homes are and what goes into their production. I hope this information helps you as you start looking at these homes to choose your next family home.
